Two chassis have been designed and purchased in order to rebuild Coaches 23 and 25 (formerly 10 & 9). Shortly after unloading, the two new chassis stand on Welsh Highland rails for the first time. Simplex loco No.4 was used to shunt them down to the WHR(P) works at Gelert's Farm. Mark Herbert, Feb 2005 640x480, 48KiB (large file: 1600x1200, 320KiB ) |

Another view of the inaugural train! The two chassis are upside down, which is why the angular truss rods (to provide extra strength) stick up above the frame. Mark Herbert, Feb 2005 640x480, 61KiB (large file: 1600x1200, 318KiB ) |

The coaches' first journey was far from simple. The unusual size and shape of the load meant that extra care was needed. The Carriage Department is keen to get the coaches on their own wheels even if only to make them easier to manoeuver! Mark Herbert, Feb 2005 640x480, 41KiB (large file: 1600x1200, 319KiB ) |

FR Coach No.10 was originally built in 1873 as a bogie luggage brake van, apparently to a design by G.P.Spooner, and at the time numbered No.2. In 1921 it was rebuilt at Boston Lodge Works on the Festiniog, with a new body incorporating a guard's compartment and two 3rd class compartments, and then used on the Welsh Highland on many occasions.
