We ran an intensive train service for the whole weekend, with regular passenger trains, and demonstration freight trains in the hands of the mighty LYd2 diesel Number 60, "Eryri". Here, "Gelert" arrives back at Porthmadog (WHR) with the passenger train, while "Eryri" waits for permission to depart. Mark Herbert 676x507, 95KiB (large file: 2048x1536, 522KiB ) |

Typical weather for the weekend as LYd2 Number 60 prepares to depart Porthmadog (WHR) with the demonstration freight train. Bagnall steam loco "Gelert" waits with the passenger stock in platform 1. John Eastwood 691x467, 54KiB (large file: 1152x864, 338KiB ) |

Gelert returns to Porthmadog (WHR) with the passenger train, while original WHR loco "Russell" waits in platform 2 headshunt. "Russell" was on display for the last time before he goes for heavy overhaul, which means he won't be seen here for two years at least. John Eastwood 691x469, 46KiB (large file: 1152x864, 330KiB ) |

A lineup of WHR(P) steam power in the headshunt at Porthmadog (WHR) station. Bagnall steam loco "Gelert", on the right, is preparing to run round while operating the passenger service. "Russell", on the left, is currently out of service awaiting overhaul. John Eastwood 691x518, 64KiB (large file: 1152x864, 376KiB ) |

Gloomy weather means the lights on LYd2 Number 60 are on as it accelerates past Gelert's Farm Works, heading for Pen-y-Mount. The mountain in the background, Moel-y-Gest, towers over Porthmadog, but disappeared in cloud for much of the weekend. John Eastwood 518x542, 46KiB (large file: 864x1152, 137KiB ) |

The sun did come out in the end. All of a sudden, the mist lifted on Saturday afternoon to give a fine sunny evening. LYd2 Number 60 passes Gelert's Farm signalbox with the demonstration freight train, made up of box vans formerly at RAF Trecwn in Pembrokeshire. Gelert runs round the freight train on the last working of Saturday evening. The brake van at the back of the freight has open sides, which was very pleasant for the weather at the time, but had been almost unbearable in the torrential rain earlier that day. Bye bye "Russell"! Bagnall tank engine "Gelert", on the right, shunts the WHR's flagship engine back to the shed at the end of the day. "Russell" is out of service at the moment, waiting for overhaul, which is due to begin shortly. Hopefully the next time this scene happens, "Russell" will be moving under his own power! LYd2 Number 60 rounds the curve past Gelert's Farm Works. This front end view gives an idea of this engine's huge size compared to the two foot gauge track. Visitors had chance to ride in the cab, and see the railway from an unusual vantage point. David Barnwell 480x640, 90KiB |

The Moelwyn mountains form a superb backdrop as Bagnall 0-4-2T Gelert makes its way past the works. This train is something of a family affair - at the controls is Mark Seale, one of the WHR(P)'s youngest steam crew. His dad Steve is with him on the footplate, and his brother David is just visible leaning out of the guard's van! David Barnwell 480x640, 37KiB |

Polished to perfection for the occasion, Gelert attracts a fair amount of attention as it rests at Porthmadog (WHR) station before drawing forward to run round its train. David Barnwell 640x479, 44KiB |

Russell on display in the platform 2 headshunt at Porthmadog (WHR). The WHR's flagship engine attracted a fair amount of attention over the weekend as it was his last appearance before heavy overhaul. David Barnwell 640x479, 71KiB |

A contrast in WHR diesel power. LYd2 Number 60 (left) dwarfs Ruston 40DL "Glaslyn" as it passes Gelert's Farm Works with a freight train. "Glaslyn" is being used for "drive an engine", a popular attraction at WHR(P) special events where visitors get chance to try their hand at the controls of a locomotive under the supervision of one of our expert drivers.
